Vocational Programmes

Trades Academy

The Wellington Trades Academy is a fees-free, dual enrolment programme.  Year 12 students are enrolled at school and Polytech e.g. Weltec School of Hospitality, Whitireia Porirua or Te Auaha campus for the year.   Courses offer unit standard credits with the focus on practical-learning in a specific vocational strand that aims to prepare students for tertiary study, an apprenticeship or employment.

The application process sits alongside our subject selection at the end of Year 11 and places are limited.  The process is administered by Onslow College and the selection process managed by Wellington Trades Academy.

Gateway Programme

Gateway is a structured work-based learning programme for Year 12 and 13 students, funded through the Tertiary Education Commission.

Gateway offers first-hand work experience to senior students to explore a career option, with the aim of supporting them to make smooth transitions from secondary school to tertiary study, an apprenticeship or employment.

Workplace preparation courses offer students training in First Aid, Health & Safety, Customer Services, Interview Techniques and Financial Literacy skills to prepare for their work placements.

The Gateway class can be selected as part of subject selection.  Another option is to be a floating Gateway student and have a work placement only.

All students have an individual learning plan developed with them which includes industry-based learning and a work experience of their choice.

STAR Courses

STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource) Courses are an opportunity for Year 11 - Year 13 students to participate in short courses offered by a range of Tertiary Education Providers & Industry Training Providers.
