Panui to Whanau – 21st March, 2024

22/03/2024 By Miranda Mclaughlin

Kia ora e te whānau,

A big thank you to the parents who attended the Ako Conferences. We had 840 bookings and enjoyed meeting with the whānau who came. We hope you enjoyed making those important connections between home and school and that it continues for a successful and happy year.

Excitement is building for the annual Year 9 camp leaving next Tuesday 26th March. All Year 9 students and their Year 13 Peer Support Leaders will spend 2 nights at El Rancho and complete a range of activities to develop understanding of our values and to strengthen understanding of each other in classes and groups. We look forward to hearing about all the adventures!

Summer Tournament is well under way this week and we’ve seen some great action shots from our Futsal (at Akau Tangi), Volleyball (held in Palmerston North with almost 200 other college teams from around NZ ) and Ultimate (in Taupo) teams. Our Ultimate team were crowned ‘Spirit Champions’ of the 2024 NZSS Ultimate tournament. Go Onslow!

The Year 10 Literacy & Numeracy for NCEA evening on Tuesday night was very well attended and we appreciate parents taking such an interest in this important change for our young people. We will hold another evening later in the year to give information about NCEA as a qualification.

Covid is still around and we have noticed a surge in cases among students and staff. We highly recommend reading, again, the advice from Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ) here of isolating for 5-days to protect others in our community. We understand having relievers in place of usual teachers  can be disruptive for students, but we will do our best to minimise changes where possible. Any concerns please reach out to your child’s Ako teacher.

Our school production, The Sound of Music is coming up very soon, on April 3-6 (two shows on Saturday 6th). Tickets are selling fast! Don’t miss your chance to see our Onslow College rising stars share their version of this classic theatre show! Tickets are here – on sale now.

“In a distant land, far, far away, reside a people, happy and content, at peace with the world and their place within it.

Something stirs…”

Through fantasy and fairytale, using a music theatre classic, we will weave a tale of power and oppression. Come and see our characters tell their story as they face the truth of their world and seek to escape its confines; finding love, friendship and hope along the way.

Onslow College Kapa Haka group has started for the year. If students are interested in joining the group please come along to Te Ara on Thursday afternoons at 3:30-5pm. All welcome, no Kapa Haka experience needed.

We wish everybody a Happy Easter and please travel safely if you are going away for the long weekend.

Please reach out to me or any of the Senior Leadership Team if you have any questions.

Nga mihi nui,

Sheena Millar

Tumuaki/Principal
