Extended Learning Opportunities
This year Onslow College will trial re-arranging the timetable structure to allow a double spell in each timetable line, on either side of Interval or Lunch (i.e. no 2 hour classes). This will mean that staff/students have longer blocks of time to work together, once a week for most classes. The amount of curriculum time will be unchanged.
What we aim to achieve by this change is:
- To create time for deeper learning/teaching & applied learning
- To make the most of learning time in order to raise student achievement
- To get to know our learners and improve student-teacher relationships with a more concentrated time for students/teachers to interact
- To complement Ako time
- To create opportunities for self-directed learning under teacher supervision, especially with BYOD.
The experiences of other NZ schools is largely positive around the extended learning times, with many indicating that pedagogy has improved, as well as student achievement.
We will review the changes throughout the year and seek feedback from students, families and whanau as part of this process.
