Learning Support
The Learning Support Department assists teachers to support and monitor progress for students with particular learning difficulties or with special abilities. Generally this support takes part in the regular class setting. Parents and students can discuss concerns with subject or form teachers who will then seek assistance from the Learning Support Department, or, they may contact the Department themselves.
Students with major special education needs are offered an Individual Education Plan (IEP) Parents should indicate special needs on the enrolment card.
For students experiencing difficulty with written work, reading or spelling, some tuition is offered on a whole class basis.
A Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour also assists on a part time basis for students with moderate needs. Referrals for this service must be made through the school Guidance Counsellor, year level Dean or HOD Learning Support.
Subject based extension is currently offered within the regular class room setting in a mixed- ability environment. Other extension opportunities can be found in the many clubs and co-curricular activities offered at Onslow such as debating, drama, theatresports, cultural and sporting activities.
A separate pamphlet details the school's philosophy and learning programme for students with special academic ability and is available on request.
The Learning Support Department offers help to senior students who are referred by parents or teachers or who refer themselves. students with the greatest need have priority. Study skills workshops are compulsory for Year 11 students and are offered on a voluntary basis to students at other levels.
