NCEA Exam Checklist

Onslow College NCEA examination checklist

WHAT TO BRING

1. Water only is allowed, in a plastic bottle that is not noisy when you open it. No food, coke, etc.

2. Remember your candidate admission slip. If you forget, go to the office. They will give you a replacement.

3. Bring your student ID card to put on your desk. Scholarship candidates MUST have photo ID.

4. Make sure you bring pencils, rulers, coloured pencils, calculators, maths instruments and so on. You cannot borrow during the exam. The office will sell them but not lend them.

5. Your pens, pencils, and other equipment must be in a clear plastic bag rather than a pencil case.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

1. Arrive at school at least 20 minutes before the due time. Go to the link foyer to check which room you are in. If there is more than one room you have to find your room using the 4 digit number on your code slip, e.g. B120.

2. If you arrive 31 minutes after the start of the examination you will not be let in. Put a copy of your exam times on the fridge door so family can help you remember. Every year someone gets the day wrong!

3. After the first 45 minutes you can leave the exam room early but you can’t leave in the last 15 minutes. (However, if you have an exam clash on that day you cannot leave the room early at all.)

4. A toilet is available in the Table Mountain area, by room 56. There are toilets in the maths corridor. But, try not to sip so much fluid that you need toilet visits. You must ask for permission before leaving the exam room.

EXAM CONDUCT AND MISBEHAVIOUR

1. If you have in your bundle of papers one standard that you do not wish to attempt, DO NOT PUT A MARK ON IT. A totally empty script will not be graded. A script with one letter in it is Not Achieved.

2. A record is kept of how long you spend in the toilet because of cheating issues.

3. Obey supervisors’ instructions and be courteous. You must remain seated at the end until all scripts have been collected. Do not walk out with the papers. Do not stretch noisily and look around the room.

4. Your bags will be put at the front of the room. Your cell phone, pager, IPods, etc must be in your bag and OFF. Your watch must be cleared of alarms. You must not carry any paper (apart from your candidate slip and ID) with your pencils or in your pocket that could be suspicious especially if you go to the toilet. Do not write notes on your body.

5. If your calculator is on the list of banned graphic calculators it will be taken off you – clear the memory. Language dictionaries and spell checkers are not allowed. See the details on your code slip.

6. It is forbidden to write in pencil or to use white correction pens or fluid. Your marked paper is returned to you in January so you can check for marking errors and apply for a remark if necessary. If you have used white correction pens or pencil it is impossible to prove you haven’t altered your work at home so you will be denied the remark. Use blue or black biro only for actual writing. Other colours are fine on maps, graphs and diagrams.

7. No refill paper is allowed into the exam room. Use all the spare pages in your answer booklets for planning (cross out planning sections) and long answers. The supervisor will give you paper only when the booklet is full.

WHAT IF YOU ARE SICK OR THERE IS A FAMILY EMERGENCY?

1. If you can’t get to the exam at all because you are sick, run into a bus, get caught in a flood, have a bereavement, etc, you are entitled to compassionate consideration. These events must be recent, serious and out of your control. You or a parent must come to the school office and see Kate Williams for a special form before you go to the doctor. All the information has to be back to Kate Williams by Dec 3rd at the latest. There is no compassionate consideration for Scholarship.

2. If you sit your exam but you feel sick with the flu or you have a funeral the next day, etc see Kate Williams. You can ask for compassionate consideration for this also even though your exam will be marked. You can’t be disadvantaged: you get the higher grade of the two.
